Help for Depression

It seems that more and more people are feeling blue these days.  If you struggle with mild depression, you know what it feels like…lack of energy, can’t get motivated, negative thoughts abound, and you don’t enjoy the things you used to.  No doubt about it; mild depression can have a big effect on you.  However, it doesn’t have to take over.  Here are some strategies that can help you take charge!

 CHECK YOUR THOUGHTS

When we’re depressed, sometimes our minds can be our worst enemies.  Next time you’re feeling down, ask yourself: What do I notice myself saying in my head?  Are they helpful?  What is really true?  Discussing these questions with someone you trust can give you a fresh perspective.  Once you can see things differently, determine that you will focus on the positive. Think of it as pushing out those gloomy thoughts to make room for helpful, empowering thoughts!

 LIFESTYLE CHANGES

What else can you do about your mild depression?  Simple things like: exercise, good nutrition and adequate rest can make a difference.  Also, make sure you are taking time for things that nurture your spirit.  Spending time like: with friends, listening to music, enjoying art…you decide what works for you and then do it!  Just be sure to incorporate any new changes gradually.

 HELP OTHERS

Quite often, doing things for others helps us get our mind off ourselves and gives us a different perspective on life.  Opportunities are all around.  Maybe a neighbor is in need.  Or you may check with a local library, school, church, animal shelter, or search the Internet.  There are lots of places and ways to volunteer; something is bound to suit your interests and skills.

 So, there are various options for keeping mild depression at bay.  In many situations, it helps to think about good changes you can make, write down your options and craft an action plan.  Then work that plan!  Of course, there will be times when you have no control over the situation.  In that case, you still have a choice; you can turn your mind toward positive thoughts, choosing to view your circumstances from a new perspective.
